First Steps

Reading about healthier habits is pleasant. Starting one is harder. This page is a deliberately modest roadmap for your first fortnight, built around the four themes we write about most: moving, resting, eating and paying attention. None of it requires equipment, a membership or a new wardrobe, and all of it can be paused without guilt.

If you have a health condition, take regular medicine, are recovering from illness or are simply unsure whether more activity is right for you, check with your doctor before you begin. Our health information notice says more about why.

Days one to three: just notice

Resist the urge to change anything yet. For three days, jot down a few plain observations in a notebook or on your phone:

  • roughly how much you walked, and whether it was by choice or by necessity;
  • when you went to bed, when you actually fell asleep and how you felt on waking;
  • when you ate, and whether meals were planned or grabbed;
  • one moment each day when you felt tense, flat or unusually good.

The point is not to judge the notes. It is to find the easiest place to begin, which is rarely the place you would have guessed.

Days four to seven: one short walk

Add a single walk to each day, short enough that skipping it would feel silly. Around the block, to a shop a little further away, a lap of the car park at lunch. Keep the pace comfortable; you should still be able to talk. If you are curious about how many steps make sense for you, our article on daily step counts argues for starting where you are rather than chasing a target.

Days eight to ten: protect the evening

Now turn to sleep. Choose one change from this list and try it every night for three nights:

  1. set a regular time to start winding down, and keep it at weekends too;
  2. dim the lights and put screens out of reach for the last part of the evening;
  3. keep the bedroom cool, dark and as quiet as you can manage;
  4. swap a late coffee or tea for something without caffeine.

For more ideas, see our piece on shaping sleep patterns and choosing tools.

Days eleven to fourteen: one easy food change

Pick something additive rather than restrictive. A piece of fruit with breakfast, an extra handful of vegetables at dinner, a glass of water before your afternoon snack. Adding a good thing tends to be easier to keep up than banning a familiar one, and it leaves less room for the all-or-nothing thinking that derails many plans.

At the end of the fortnight

Look back at your notes from the first three days and compare. Keep whatever felt manageable, drop whatever felt like a chore, and choose one new small thing for the next two weeks. A gentle stretching routine is a good candidate; our guide to stretching in a busy day shows how.

If you would rather browse than follow a plan, the Start Here page offers a reading route instead. And if this roadmap helped, or did not, we would like to hear about it through the contact page.

Before you start

Getting ready for your first fortnight

A little preparation makes the first two weeks feel lighter.

  • A notebook or notes app for three days of honest observations
  • Shoes that are comfortable for a twenty-minute walk
  • A rough idea of a short route from your front door
  • One evening habit you are willing to try changing
  • A quick word with your doctor if you have a health condition or take regular medicine
  • Permission to skip a day without starting over
